Manhattan

Manhattan
Schoolchildren are familiar with the purchase of Manhattan from the Manhattes Indians for twenty-four dollars worth of kettles, axes, and cloth. Manhattan is one of five boroughs of New York City, but is the hub of the island. Its population is greater than that of some small countries. And it has been, and is, the "melting pot" of the country, with its racial, religious, and ethnic mix.
The Manhattan cocktail, a mixture of whiskey, vermouth, and bitters, was introduced at New York's Manhattan Club in 1874 at a banquet given by Winston Churchill's mother, Jennie Jerome. The club was named for the borough, and the borough for the Indians who had lived there. And then there is Manhattan clam chowder, with tomatoes swimming in it, unlike the milky clam soup from New England. And the name Manhattan project, undertaken to build the atomic bomb, has become a part of history.
