Malthusian

Malthusian
   , MAILTHUSIANISM
Malthus became widely known for his Essay on the Principles of Population, published in 1798. The main theory of his book is that population tends to increase faster than the means to feed it. This is called the Malthusian Doctrine. Malthus did not claim to be the originator of this idea, but his systematic exposition drew attention to the population problem. Malthus's theories as a whole are referred to as Malthusianism. Supporters of Malthus or his theories are known as Malthusians.
Charles Darwin read Malthus's works and noted the phrase "struggle for existence." This thought stimulated Darwin to find the key to biological evolution in the face of natural selection, for it suggested the relationship between progress and the survival of the fittest.
